Elliniko Metro S.A.

Attiko Metro S.A.

ELLINIKO METRO S.A. is a state company of high scientific training, which, based on reliable scheduling and systematic work implements the development of the Athens Metro network. Nowadays, the two Lines of the Athens Metro are 59.7 km long in total with 40 modern Stations (including four stations, as well as 20.7km of suburban railway line from DOUKISSIS PLAKENTIAS Station to the Airport) and serve 938,000 passengers. In addition, Line 1 of ISAP serves more than 460,000 passengers. Therefore – combined with the Tramway and the Suburban Railway, the Metro contributes to the development of a Modern Transit Model and to the enhancement of the every-day life in Attica basin.

Further to the comfort, speed and reliability of its itineraries, the Athens Metro is renowned for the impressive archaeological exhibits at the central stations of its network, as well as the works of art of prominent artists, which embellish almost all stations of Lines 2 and 3. It is worth mentioning that thanks to the construction of the Athens Metro, the greatest archaeological excavation was carried out in Athens (79.000 m2), which brought to light more than 50,000 archaeological finds from the Neolithic period until the present day.

One of the most important and complicated projects of ELLINIKO METRO S.A. is the Metro construction in Thessaloniki. The Contract for the Metro construction, 9.6 km long, with 13 modern stations was signed in April 7th 2006 and the construction works of the project are at an advanced stage, while both TBMs are currently constructing two parallel double track tunnels quietly and without any disturbance at a depth ranging from 16 to 31 meters.

The experience, know-how and effectiveness of ELLINIKO METRO guarantee the construction of an ultra modern Metro network, whose technological standards shall be even higher than those of the Athens Metro network. In May 2009, the Ministry of Infrastructures, Transport and Networks, in co-operation with ELLINIKO METRO S.A., proceeded to the tender for the first Metro extension to Kalamaria and in June 2013 it signed the relevant contract with the contracting company. Works executed in Kalamaria extension including a 4.8km long underground line and 5 new stations, i.e. NOMARCHIA, KALAMARIA, ARETSOU, NEA KRINI and MICRA, have commenced and this Project is expected to serve more than 65,000 passengers on a daily basis. At the same time, the extension to Stavroupoli is at a design stage. This way, a complete Metro network will be created in the area of Thessaloniki that will transform the city in terms of transport.

ELLINIKO METRO S.A. continues the implementation of new network extensions. The contract for the Line 3 further extension from Aghia Marina to Piraeus (7.6 km, 6 Stations) was concluded in March 2012, the objective being the Municipality of Piraeus to be served by 3 Metro Stations and to be connected to the Airport. Moreover, the Ministry of Infrastructures, Transport and Networks and ELLINIKO METRO S.A. prepare all necessary designs for the construction of a new Metro Line, which is anticipated to alter dramatically the transportation map of Athens.
