ATTIKO METRO, in cooperation with the National Technical University (NTU) and specifically its Seismic Technology Laboratory (STL), conducted on a seismic test bench a laboratory test in order to calibrate the accelerometers installed in Metro stations. After this calibration, ATTIKO METRO shall continue to monitor, in cooperation with STL, the seismic activity in the area of Metro stations. It is worth noting that, during the strong earthquake in Athens in 1999, ATTIKO METRO -with the aid of these instruments- recorded and delivered to the Greek State valuable data regarding the seismic activity in various areas of the Attica Basin. This data were utilized on the one hand to study the earthquake impact on the structures and, on the other hand, to update the seismic code for buildings. The installation of similar and more advanced instruments has been specified for the Metro extension to Piraeus, as well as for Thessaloniki Metro, in the framework of monitoring the seismic activity in all stations of the network. The above actions demonstrate ATTIKO METRO’s sensitivity as regards seismic protection both of its stations and the general urban web in the wider area of Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus.
