Statements made by Mr. George Karayiannis, Secretary General of Infrastructures, on the progress of Thessaloniki Metro works
Mr. George Karayiannis, Secretary General of Infrastructures, visited today the city of Thessaloniki, in order to be informed on the progress of the Metro works. His first stop was Pylea Depot, visiting next FLEMING, PANEPISTIMIO and AGHIA SOFIA Stations.
After his visit, he made the following statements:
“We are here today in the city of Thessaloniki in order to supervise the progress of the Metro works. To our great satisfaction, we ascertained that construction works are advancing at a very intense pace on all work fronts.
I wish to express my gratitude to ATTIKO METRO S.A. for its serious efforts put to this project. Works are now advancing very quickly and in the coming period progress will be both continuous and visible for all our fellow-citizens. More precisely:
- Within the next few weeks, in cooperation with the Contactor, we will proceed with the partial power supply of the Depot for the train tests to commence.
- Further to the issuance by the Central Archaeological Council of a positive opinion on the temporary detachment and placing back of the archaeological finds at VENIZELOU Station and in view of the forthcoming issuance of the relevant Ministerial Decision, we are currently preparing for the most expedient compilation of the necessary designs, anticipated to have been completed in May, and the imminent commencement of the archaeological works. We are certain that with the cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, the city’s Departments of Antiquities, the Municipality of Thessaloniki and all local authorities, the archaeological excavation will proceed very quickly.
We are facing the citizens with total sincerity. We are implementing what Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, Minister of Infrastructures and Transport, has stated. Our joint efforts have one single goal: to have the Base Line of Thessaloniki Metro completed and commissioned in the first months of 2023, as promised, putting an end to the inconvenience the citizens have been suffering for so many years now”.
