The Project concerning the Tramway Extension to Piraeus has been completed since 2019, while its commissioning had been scheduled for January 2020. However, after the unfortunate incident of the fire in a building listed for preservation on Omiridou Skylitsi Street, the tramway commissioning was suspended for safety reasons, further to the order issued by the Traffic Police for the prohibition of the traffic on the right lane of the subject Street where the tramway vehicles pass by.
The problems related to the structural integrity of the building were successfully addressed. The prohibition of the traffic was raised by the Traffic Police and, thus, it was made possible for the tramway vehicles to be delivered back to circulation, for the relevant tests to be completed and for the revenue service of the Tramway Extension to commence on 15.12.2021.
Moreover, through the procurement of 25 new Tramway vehicles, which have already completed the prerequisite checks and tests and have been integrated into the new Extension and the existing network of STASY S.A., ATTIKO METRO S.A. further improved the transport services provided by the existing network of the Athens Tramway, covering the new needs in rolling stock that arise from the Extension of the Tramway network to Piraeus contributing, at the same time, in the sustainable and green development of transportations in the Attica region.
