  • THESSALONIKI METRO – The works for the construction of the second Station on the extension to Kalamaria have commenced

The works for the construction of NEA KRINI Station on the Metro extension to Kalamaria have started today. This is the second worksite where the contractor is now executing construction works, the first one being the TBM start-up shaft.

The grandest transport infrastructure project in the city of Thessaloniki is now ready to be extended to Kalamaria, with the construction of five new stations (NOMARCHIA, KALAMARIA, ARETSOU, NEA KRINI and MICRA) and 4.8 Km of underground line. The project’s design also comprises the construction of the infrastructure for the future extension of the line to the Airport, as well as a well-organized bus-Metro transfer area at MICRA Station.

Once this Metro extension becomes operational, Kalamaria Municipality shall be upgraded in terms of transport services, given that the distance from MICRA Station to the center of Thessaloniki shall be covered within less than 15 minutes. This project is expected to serve more than 65,000 passengers on a daily basis. The construction of Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria is foreseen to be completed in 2018.

The worksite area of the new NEA KRINI Metro Station was visited today by Mr. Stratos Simopoulos, Secretary General of Public Works, and Mr. Theodosis Bakoglidis, Mayor of Kalamaria. The Manager of Thessaloniki Metro Mr. Giorgos Konstantinidis informed them that the construction works of the extension to Kalamaria are currently ahead of the time schedule and presented to them the technical features of the five new Metro Stations.

Mr. Simopoulos pointed out that the funds for the Metro extension to Kalamaria have been secured and that, taking into account the solutions given to the problems emerging during the construction of the Metro base line, in a few years the city of Thessaloniki shall be served by the most modern Metro system in Europe.

Mr. Bakoglidis underlined the impeccable cooperation among the Municipality of Kalamaria, the Ministry of Infrastructures, Transport and Networks, and ATTIKO METRO S.A in the framework of the project’s construction, and stressed that all efforts are made, aiming at causing the least possible disturbance around the future worksite areas.
