The candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) for the Presidency of the European Commission Mr. Jean Claude Juncker, accompanied by the Minister of Development and Competitiveness Mr. Kostis Chatzidakis, visited today the sites of the Piraeus extension Project and, in particular, the TBM Start-up Shaft (Metromole) at Aghia Varvara and the Metro worksite on Eleftherias Square, in Korydallos area.
Mr. Jean Claude Juncker and his associates were welcomed at the worksite by the Secretary General of Public Works Mr. Stratos Simopoulos and the Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A. Mr. Christos Tsitouras, who briefed them about ATTIKO METRO S.A. projects under execution and, in particular, about the Metro Extension to Piraeus.
The construction of this extension commenced in March 2012 and constitutes the most significant transportation project currently under implementation in the capital. It is a 7.6 km-long extension, with six (6) new Stations, in areas with increased needs for fixed route transportation modes. Upon completion of this extension to Piraeus, the citizens to be served on a daily basis will be over 130,000 and the overall construction cost of the Project amounts to 730 million €. The Base Contract for the construction of the Project at hand has been assigned to a Joint Venture of Greek and European Companies. This Project will be delivered to the public in 2017; until the present date, its construction progresses smoothly without any particular problems or delays, and the archaeological investigation works in the worksite areas have also been completed.
Upon completion of this Project at PIRAEUS Station, a significantly important Transportation Center will be developed. This Center will connect Metro Lines 1 and 3 with the Port of Piraeus, the Suburban Railway and the Tramway Network facilitating, thus, all kinds of transfers among all modes of transport. Moreover, the connection between the Port of Piraeus and Athens International Airport – via Metro Line 3 – will ensure development and the benefits it brings to the wider area of Athens and to the National Economy, in general.
