Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A. and Mr. Dimitrios Dinopoulos, representative of THEMELI S.A. Contracting Company signed today the Contract for the construction of the Tramway Extension to Piraeus, of an amount equal to EURO 61.5 million. This Project is funded in the framework of the National Strategic Reference Framework and “Attica 2007-2013” Operational Program.
The ceremony for the conclusion of the Contract took place at the premises of the Ministry, in the presence of Mr. Konstis Hatzidakis, Minister of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, Mr. Stavros Kalogiannis, Deputy Minister, Mr. Vassilis Michaloliakos, Mayor of Piraeus, Mr. Stratos Simopoulos, Secretary General of Public Works and Mr. Nikolaos Stathopoulos, Secretary General of Transport; all attendees expressed their satisfaction about the promotion of major projects under construction in the most significant Port of Greece.
Together with the Metro extension to Piraeus currently under construction (AGHIA MARINA – PIRAEUS – 6 Stations, 7.6 km), the city of Piraeus will obtain a modern tramway network (N. FALIRO – CENTRE – PIRAEUS PORT), serving on a daily basis 35,000 passengers.
The tramway extension, 5.4 km long with 12 stops, will start from ISAP Station at Karaiskaki Stadium and will terminate at the Port of Piraeus, with AKTI POSSIDONOS being the Terminal Stop.
The construction of the project will commence immediately and is anticipated to be completed in 25 months. ATTIKO METRO S.A. will announce an international tender for the supply of 25 new tramway vehicles to support the new extension.
Right after the signing of the contract, Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A. pointed out the following: “This is the second major investment project in Piraeus. In a few years, the city of Piraeus will obtain both a Metro and a tramway network to serve its residents and all travelers. Apart from the transportation services to be offered, the areas of Piraeus served by the aforementioned means of transport will be drastically upgraded; ATTIKO METRO S.A. will proceed with the creation of green areas, where 1,200 trees are foreseen to be planted, park redevelopment works and the installation of a modern system for waste collection in underground containers. Moreover, during the first stage of the project, new traffic arrangements are foreseen for serving Piraeus and its residents in the best possible way”.
Through the aforementioned infrastructures, the greatest Port of the Greece will regain its lost glory and will be transformed into a modern traffic junction uniting two Metro Lines (Line 1 and 3), the Port (OLP), the Suburban Railway and the Tramway, facilitating, thus, thousands of citizens wishing to travel by boat.
At this very moment, ATTIKO METRO S.A. Projects constitute the most powerful weapon for the development so much needed for our country. ATTIKO METRO S.A. will continue to work in the most methodic manner to plan the future extensions for both the Metro and the Tramway networks”.
The Ministry of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks promotes the following extensions of the Tramway network, namely:
- Stage Β of the extension to Kallipoli
- Stage C of the extension to Keratsini and Perama
- Extension to Argyroupoli (Elliniko – Depot – Argyroupoli)
- Syngtagma to Egyptou Square (Pedion tou Areos) Extension
