The relevant Contract is expected to be signed in the beginning of 2013, on condition that no legal obstacle shall be posed by the remaining bidding Joint Ventures / Companies.

Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria is estimated to be completed in 5 years and is expected to serve more than65,000 passengers on a daily basis.

With regard to the aforementioned developments, the Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A. Mr. Christos Tsitouras stated that: “today, the expectations of the citizens of Thesaloniki are realized, since we now are very close to the signing of the Contract for the first Metro extension to Kalamaria. This is a project approximately 5km-long with 5 modern stations that shall serve an extended area of Thessaloniki urban complex. The Metro extension shall be constructed using 2 Tunnel Boring Machines and shall be commissioned sooner than the 60-month period foreseen by the Project’s initial Call for Tenders, since no delays are expected due to archaeological excavations. Moreover, it is particularly significant to stress that during the construction of the Project, more than 1,000 job positions are expected to be generated.

In addition, infrastructure provisions are made in the scope of the Project for the future extension of the Metro Line to the Airport,as well as for the connection with a Transfer Station at MICRA Station. Upon commissioning of this extension, the Metro network shall contribute to the further decrease of the number of the circulating vehicles by approximately 20,000 private vehicles, since this network is expected to serve more than 65,000 passengers on a daily basis”.
