On June 12th 2012, in the presence of the Minister of PYMEDI Mr. S. Simopoulos, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between ATTIKO METRO S.A., represented by its Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Christos Tsitouras, and the Municipality of Piraeus, represented by its Mayor Mr. Vassilis Michaloliakos.
The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed at a time when an extensive plan of projects falling under the responsibility of ATTIKO METRO S.A. starts to be implemented in the area of Piraeus, while at the same time this memorandum is the culmination of the constructive cooperation already developed between the two agencies and lays the foundations for its continuation, aiming at the expeditious construction of ATTIKO METRO S.A. projects in the Municipality of Piraeus.
In particular, the projects pursued by ATTIKO METRO S.A. are the following:
- The extension of Line 3 from Ag. Marina (former Haidari) to Piraeus, a project already under construction, with three (3) out of its six (6) new stations located within the Municipality of Piraeus (“Maniatika”, “Pireas” and “Dimotiko Threatro”).
- The conversion of Neo Faliro-Piraeus Line 1 section into an underground structure with the addition of a new underground station in the area of “Keranis” factory, a project currently at the design phase, for whose construction the relevant funding will be sought.
- The extension of the Tramway line from the Irinis & Filias Stadium (Peace and Friendship Stadium – SEF) to Piraeus (Phase A’), a project whose tender procedures have been completed and the relevant construction contract is expected to be signed within the summer of 2012. Within the framework of the Project, ATTIKO METRO S.A. shall also undertake the execution of major traffic arrangements in Piraeus area, on the basis of the relevant traffic study prepared by the Municipality of Piraeus.
- The extension of the Tramway line to Piraeus – Phase B’, as far as to the area of Piraiki (Hatzikyriakio and Freatyda), a project currently under design.
- The extension of the Tramway line from Piraeus to Keratsini – Perama, a project already in the maturing process.
- The investigation of the possibility to construct an underground parking space in the area of Piraeus Port for reasons of transfer to the fixed track modes planned by ATTIKO METRO S.A.
The advancement of the aforementioned projects, whose total budget rises to approximately €1 billion, shall drastically alter, in terms of transport and development, the prevailing conditions in Piraeus and the wider area, and shall significantly improve the traffic and environmental conditions in this area.
