The Metro continues its extension and already the works for Line 3 extension from MONASTIRAKI to EGALEO, 4.3 km long, with three stations (VOTANIKOS,ELEONAS,EGALEO) are at an advanced construction phase.
In addition, on November 4th 2004 the additional extension of this Line was put to tender, which, following the addition of a station, will reach the Municipality of Aghia Marina (Haidari). The project has been intergrated in the 3rd CSF during the recent revision with an estimated budget amounting to 200 million euros.
Until the present day, 20 greek and foreign construction companies have been provided with the tender documents by ATTIKO METRO S.A. The deadline for the expression of interest for the tender is January 10th 2004.
The tendering of the extension EGALEO-AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) includes:
- the tunnel of the line, 1.5km long, which will pass underneath Iera Odos and shall be bored using the conventional method of underground boring.
- AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) Station, whose limits are set at the building plot consisting of Iera Odos, Krinis, Katsarou and Aghias Marinas streets with two entrances/exits on either sides of Iera Odos.The location of the station was selected based on the availability of the areas and the extent to which it is possible to serve the said stations via a transfer station and a car park.
- a Transfer Station – car park, which will be constructed where AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) Station is to be located and which shall have a 380-car capacity.
- The Depot in the area of Eleonas, 86 000 m2, a project absolutely necessary for the operation of Line 3. At the Depot roof slab, consideration is given to the possibility to construct a Central Intercity Bus Terminal.With the construction of the Depot, as well as of the Central Intercity Bus Terminal, the surrounding area of Eleonas will be upgraded.
The Depot is provided for to be ready in 2007, while the Line and AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) Station in 2008.
This extension is anticipated to serve the wider area of Egaleo, Aghia Marina (Haidari) and Aghia Varvara and namely the Hospital for Infectious diseases, Dromokaitio Hospital, Attiko Hospital and the commercial area.
This Metro extension for the residents of the aforementioned Municipalities is extremely important since the time needed for their daily transfer to the city center(SYNTAGMA) will be only reduced to8 minutes!
In general terms, the operation of the four new Stations of Line 3, will contribute significantly to the upgrading of areas which are not within easy reach of the city center.
It is estimated that the operation of AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) Station shall serve 30 000 passengers on a daily basis and the overall ridership of Line 3, at AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) – MONASTIRAKI section is estimated to exceed 100 000 persons.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the planning and the design of further extending Line 3 from AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) Station to Piraeus and Zea, with 7 new stations, in order to serve the transportation needs of some areas such as Aghia Varvaram Korydallos, Nikaia, Tabouria, the commercial centre of Piraeus and Passalimani is at an advanced phase.
